It does not require the purchase of DLT tape drives or tapes and does not rely on someone changing the tapes or checking the backups. It therefore saves the expense of removing the tapes to an off site secure area. The data is fully encrypted preventing copying unlike tape which if stolen can be loaded on any machine.
